Researchers
have connected the cuban TAQUECHELs from the Oriente Province with the french
TACUSSELs from the meridional portion of France, based in various official
documents found in Cuba, where the name TACUSSEL was in effect acknowledged as
the precursor to TAQUECHEL. It is evident that the French last name TACUSSEL
was deformed to TAQUECHEL in Cuba, to more closely emulate the sound of the
name in Castillian.
(The
mentioned documents that give proof of the last name deformation in Cuba are
available to TACUSSEL Family members and to TAQUECHEL Family members, by
contacting Jose Angel TAQUECHEL III or Roberto Balbis).
The TACUSSEL
(France 1400 to date)
The TACUSSEL
last name is first found in the 1400's, when Pietro Tacucelli or TACUSSELl
entered France. According to the family tradition, he came from Grece after the
fall of the Greek Empire of Constantinople on May 29, 1453 as it can be
verified at Compois Cadastral de Caderousse de l'An 1460, Archives de
Caderousse, Série CC, Tome 1, Page 162;
his first name became Pierre and his last name was deformed or changed to
TACUSSEL.
Pierre
TACUSSEL had two sons: Jehan and Claude born during 1459, who settled in
Caderousse and commenced the French family line, as it can be verified at Compois
Cadastral de Caderousse de l'An 1490, Archives de Caderousse, Série CC, Tome 2,
Page 80, where a Testament in their favour is registered.
The descendants of Jehan and Claude were: Antoine (1510), Claude
(1512), Pierre (1513), Jaulmet-Jacques (1513), Gabriel (1514) and Barthelemy
(?), being Claude (1512), the second son, the one producing the family line
that would eventually procreate Pierre Vincent TACUSSEL GRANIER, who would be
known in Cuba as Vicente TAQUECHEL GRANIER. The secuency of descendance from
Pietro Tacucelli or Pierre TACUSSEL to Pierre Vincent TACUSSEL GRANIER would be
the following:
Pierre TACUSSEL
> Claude >
Claude > Pierre
> Andre >
Claude > Pierre
> Francois >
Pierre Vincent TACUSSEL
Pierre Vincent TACUSSEL GRANIER
was born in Violes, France, on January 22, 1787; he was the son of Monsieur
Francois TACUSSEL, born during 1730, 31, 32 or 33 and deceaced in Aix Provence
on December 30, 1813 and Madame Francoise GRANIER born in Marseille on 1764 and
deceaced in Marseille on March 1st, 1837, who at the time of death she was
domiciled in 42 Street du Ferrats; Pierre Vincent TACUSSEL GRANIER was the grandson
of Pierre TACUSSEL (1685) who married on June 26, 1729 Marie Laffanour (1695)
and of Joseph GRANIER AND LOUISE
OLIVIER. Pierre TACUSSEL, the grandfather of Vincent TACUSSEL GRANIER, was the
author of Branch “J” TACUSSEL, as it can be verified within the TACUSSEL
original Family Tree.
(The TACUSSEL Family Tree is available to all family members by
contacting Jose Angel TAQUECHEL III)
The TAQUECHEL
(Cuba 1800 to date)
The TAQUECHEL
last name is first found in the 1800's in Santiago de Cuba, when Pierre Vincent
TACUSSEL entered Cuba. According to the family tradition, one Monsieur
TAQUECHEL came from Marseille, however, his procedence in the documents found
in Cuba refered to the port of his departure from France rather than to the
place where he was born. In short, the first TAQUECHEL in Cuba was Pierre
Vincent TACUSSEL GRANIER, born in Violes, France, on January 22, 1787. Church
records for Vicente TAQUECHEL in Cuba mention his parents: Francisco (François)
TAQUECHEL (TACUSSEL) and his mother Francisca (Françoise) GRANIER, as being
from France, where they lived AND DIED. Other children were born in France to
the couple of Francois TACUSSEL and Francoise GRANIER.
It is likely that Don Vicente TAQUECHEL was the only TACUSSEL who
migrated to Cuba in the early 1820's, possibly coming from Saint Domingue de
Haiti, a very prosperous and important French Colony at the time and entering
the island by the Port of Santiago de Cuba, Oriente Province, a very important
and prosperous Spanish Colony at the time. Don Vicente TAQUECHEL apparently
lived in Santiago de Cuba, Capital of the Oriente Province in the early 1800's
when he befriended Isabelle Vigneron, with their union resulting in the birth
of three children born in the 1821-1825 period. Don Vicente then befriended
Galatea Marrot, with their union resulting in the birth of seven children born
in the 1832-1848 period.
As it is to be supposed, the ten children would be named in French: Pierre Theodore (1821), Jean Vincent (1823),
Pierre Vincent (1825), Jean Baptiste Eugene (1832), Jean Joseph Numas (1834),
Antoinette Cecile (1837), Paul Alexis (1839), Jules Charles (1842), Emile
Francois (1845) and Alphonse (1848). However, they would be baptized with their
given names translated into Spanish and with their original last name TACUSSEL,
deformed into TAQUECHEL and officially inscripted in Cuba, by the Catholic
Church, as such. These ten children born
in Cuba, are the authors of the Ten TAQUECHEL Familly Branches detailed within
this document.
Don Vicente TAQUECHEL died in his coffee plantation on November 1, 1855
and buried in the Cementerio General as it can be verified at the Catedral de
Santiago de Cuba within Libro 11 de Entierros de Blancos, Folio 24, n 144; he
was 68 years old. Don Vicente prepared a Testament that is full of interesting
details, as it can be verified at the Archivo Histórico Provincial (AHP) de Santiago de Cuba, Fondo:
Protocolos Notariales, Legajo: 400, Folio 4, Escribanía: Real Hacienda,
Ano: 1854, Notario actuante: José Ramón Chacón, Notario en cargo de la
Escribanía: Pedro Secundino Silva.
In brief, Don
Vicente states in his Testament that when he married Galatea he did not have
any possessions and that his wife only had one slave. His only registered
possession at the time of his death was the “El Refugio” plantation covering
six and a half caballerias (roughly
100 acres or roughly 300 hectares) and 24 slaves. He mentions seven children
that he had with Galatea Marrot and two that he had with Isabelle Vigneron,
with the number of children mentioned probably being the ones which had
survived to 1854, the date of the testament. He promises freedom to two small
black boys under his tutelage and disposes of the others amongs his wife and
children. He mentions that he has had Galathie Marrot, the niece of his wife
under his tutelage ever since her mother had died. It is possible and apparent that Don Vicente had disposed of some
of his properties among his children prior to making this testament, accounting
for the various plantations and mining concerns that his sons appeared to have
had in the vicinity of El Cobre at the time of his death; he may have tried to
avoid taxation on his legacy by disposing of property prior to his death or
simply, giving his children land to work and patrimony for their financial
independency.
(The document
entitled “La Historia de Los TAQUECHEL” by Jose Angel TAQUECHEL III, tells the
story of this family beginning in France 1453 until most of them exiled from
Cuba, during the 1960’s. It is available for family members and friends just by
requesting it.)
- TAQUECHEL is
an original Cuban last name whose ten (X) branches are presented below -
The TAQUECHEL
Vigneron Linage
Pierre Vicent
TACUSSEL GRANIER, known in Cuba as Vicente TAQUECHEL, had a relationship in
Santiago de Cuba with Isabelle Vigneron in the early 1820's, producing the
TAQUECHEL Vigneron linage described below. Don Vicente TAQUECHEL apparently
lived in Santiago de Cuba before moving to Hongolosongo in La Partida del Cristo
with Rio Frio, near El Cobre, en route to Palma Soriano.
Don Vicente
and Dona Isabel had at least three children as given below based on baptismal
records filed at the Cathedral in Santiago de Cuba. However, it must be noted
that Don Vicente only recognized two of his children with Telis in the
testament which he prepared in 1854, which may simply mean that one of their
sons, Juan Vicente, was dead by that time. Curiously, the names that he
provides for his children with “Telis”
are Teodoro and Hermogenes, and Hermogenes was not the true name of any of his
children. Considering that Pedro Teodoro and Pedro Vicente were confirmed to be
alive at the time of his death, and that Pedro Teodoro was surely the Teodoro
mentioned by Don Vicente, it stands to reason that Hermogenes was the nickname
of Pedro Vicente. It is apparent that the TAQUECHEL Vigneron stayed in Santiago
de Cuba all of the time and that the boys grew up there with their mother.
Isabelle
Vigneron Pireau was born in New Orleans circa 1798. She was the daughter
of Jean Vigneron and Françoise Pireau (or Perou?) both from France. She was
called “Telis” by her relatives and
friends in Santiago de Cuba. Telis parents are registered in several documents
related to her and her life in Cuba however we do not know as to date, if she
had brothers and sisters. Madame Isabelle Vigneron Pireau died of fevers in
Santiago de Cuba, possibly on December 9 since she was buried on December 10,
1870 as it can be verified at Parroquia Santo Tomas Apostol in Santiago de Cuba
within Libro 7 de Defunciones, Folio 191 vuelto, n 239; she was reportedly 72
years old, lived within the Parroquia Santo Tomas at that time and was buried
by Priest Pedro Guerra, with rites reserved for people with some means.
Branch I TAQUECHEL
Pierre Theodore TACUSSEL Vigneron was born on April 30, 1821, probably
in Santiago de Cuba. The
son of Pierre Vincent TACUSSEL GRANIER (1787-1855) and Isabelle Vigneron
Pireau. His paternal grandparents were Francois TACUSSEL and Francoise GRANIER
and his maternal grandparents Jean Vigneron and Francoise Pireau, all from
France. He was baptized Pedro Teodoro
TAQUECHEL y Vigneron, at the Cathedral in
It is evident
that Pedro Teodoro had a relationship with Felicita Sarthous in the 1850’s
which resulted in at least one descendant.
At age 45
Pedro Teodoro married Ana Jourdain Letiroac, by Priest Pedro Guerra, on May 26,
1866 in the Parroquia Santo Tomas Apostol in Santiago de Cuba, as it can be
verified within Libro 4 de Matrimonios, Folio 24 vuelto, n 18. Jean Vigneron
and Isabelle Vigneron were witnesses to the wedding. Ana Jourdain
Letiroac was the daughter of Joseph Antoine Jourdain and Marie Francoise
Letiroac, pressumably both from France. We have not found descendancy to this
couple in Cuba to date.
There
are records of several children that appear to be related to Pedro Teodoro
although there are no records of other marriages by Pedro Teodoro:
1. Maria Dolores Petra
was exposed (or shown) in the residence of Pedro TAQUECHEL on June 2, 1843. She was baptized by Priest Pedro Guerra at
the Catedral de
2. Victor TAQUECHEL y Sarthous
was born in Santiago de Cuba, on March 6, 1858. He was baptized at the Catedral de Santiago
de Cuba on August 16, 1858 as it can be verified within Libro 35 de Bautismos,
folio 59-v (Suplida). His progenitors were Pedro Teodoro TAQUECHEL y Vigneron
of 37 years of age, single and Felicita Sarthous, the daughter of Pedro
Sarthous and Marcelina Llorent. Victor TAQUECHEL y Sarthous was reportedly a
“Maquinista” which means a mechanic, the operator or repairman of heavy
machinery.
At age 48, he married Isabel Carvajal, at 08:00 pm in the Registro
Civil Norte of Santiago de Cuba on March 18, 1907 as it can be verified within
Libro de Matrimonios, Tomo 8. At that time Victor lived at Calle baja de San
German # 24 and Isabel lived at Calle del Toro # 9, both in Santiago de Cuba.
The Municipal Judge in officiating was Don Francisco Odio y Canazas and his
Secretary Don Francisco Ortiz y Salazar.
Isabel Carvajal was
the natural daughter of Pedro Carvajal y Crombet; her mother is unknown to us
to this date.
3. Maria Caridad Wenceslao
was exposed (or shown) in the residence of Pedro Teodoro TAQUECHEL on date
unknown. She was baptized by
Priest Pedro Guerra at the Catedral de Santiago de Cuba on November 5, 1864 as
it can be verified within Libro 9 de Bautismos, Folio 55-v, n 132. Her
godparent was Pedro Teodoro. At the time of this event, Pedro Teodoro was 43
years old and single.
Note : Exposed or Shown means that the child was the illegitimate offspring of a woman in the household or of a female relative or friend who remained officially undeclared. The child was basically adopted by the head of the household.

general manager of this business and decided that he could own a similar
business of his own. He bought the Santa Rita pharmacy at Obispo Street #
155 near Mercaderes Street in La Habana on April 27, 1898. He changed its name
to “Farmacia y Drogueria TAQUECHEL”
opening the new establishment in January of 1900. His main business was the
importing, manufacturing and distribution of drugs and other products for the
use of pharmacies throughout La Habana. He struggled at the beginning but was
kept afloat by the support of French emigrés that lived in the town of Regla,
across Havana Bay. This became a franchising concern, with other retail outlets
throughout La Habana. He bought a house in the Vista Alegre neighborhood in
Santiago de Cuba for the use of some of his single and/or widowed sisters The “Farmacia y Drogueria TAQUECHEL” was
expropriated on October 13, 1960 at 11:45 am and is kept as a combination

TACUSSEL GRANIER, known in Cuba as Vicente TAQUECHEL, had a relationship in
Santiago de Cuba with Galathie Marrot Besson in the 1830's, producing the
TAQUECHEL Marrot linage described below. Don Vicente TAQUECHEL was born in
France as Vincent TACUSSEL and apparently lived in Santiago de Cuba before
moving to Hongolosongo, near El Cobre where he spend the rest of his life.
At age 41,
Vicente TAQUECHEL GRANIER was married to Galatea Marrot Besson of 20 years of
age, by Priest Bartolome Palacios on January 23, 1827, at the Catedral de
Santiago de Cuba as it can be verified within Libro 6 de Matrimonios de
Blancos, Folio 80, n 2. Witnesses to the wedding were Don Jose Neulan and her
mother Gabrielle Virginie Besson. Don Vicente and Dona Galatea had at least
seven children as given below based on baptismal records filed at the Cathedral
de Santiago de Cuba and at the Catedral de Nuestra Senora de La Caridad del
Cobre, in El Cobre, Cuba. However, it must be noted that Don Vicente recognized
his seven children with Galatea in the testament wich he prepared in 1854, by
the names of Eugenio, Numa, Cecilia, Alejo, Julio, Ernesto and Alfonso.
Considering that the given names of their children were translated into Spanish
and that we can relate each one of those names with the baptismal records, it
is not inaproppiate to assume that those were the names by which the children
were called in their daily life in Cuba. The TAQUECHEL Marrot stayed near El
Cobre until the late 1860's when they moved to Santiago de Cuba to escape the
Cuban rebels terrorizing the countryside during the 1868-78 civil war.
Galatea
Marrot Besson was born in Saint Domingue de Haiti or New Orleans circa
1807. She was the daughter of Jean Baptiste Joseph Marrot Pouset and
Gabrielle Virginie Besson, apparently from Digne Les Bains, in the Provenze
region of France. Monsieur Marrot indicates in his Testament that he had
emigrated from France to Saint Domingue at the end of the 1700's.
Unfortunately, they lost all of their possessions in that colony when the
slaves rebelled. They apparently moved to Cuba, then to New Orleans and then
back to Cuba. The Marrot Besson had five daughters who survived to adulthood:
Julia, Gabriela, Virginia, Galathea, and Galatea Maria Antonia. Maria Antonia,
as she was called, married the parisian Eugenio Sallier.
BRANCH IV TAQUECHEL
Jean Baptiste Eugene TACUSSEL Marrot was born in Cuba on November 21,
1832. The legitimate son
of Pierre Vincent TACUSSEL GRANIER (1787-1855) and Galatea Marrot Besson, were
his paternal grandparents Francois TACUSSEL and Francoise GRANIER and his
maternal grandparents Jean Baptiste Joseph Marrot Pouset and Gabrielle Virginie
Besson all from France. He was baptized Juan
Bautista Eugenio TAQUECHEL y Marrot at the Cathedral in Santiago de Cuba on
April 22, 1833 by Wenceslao Callejas y Asencio as it can be verified within
Libro 14 de Bautismos de Blancos, Folio 47 vuelto, n 51. His godparents
were the maternal grandparents Jean Baptiste Joseph Marrot Pouset and his wife
Gabrielle Virginie Besson. The birth records were reformed on May 4, 1833 in
order to correct the father’s last name; the correction reads TACUSSEL. Juan
Bautista Eugenio was a First Generation TAQUECHEL who grew up in “ Refugio ” a
Coffee Plantation that belonged to his father, located in La Partida del Cristo
with Rio Frio, in Hongolosongo, en route to Palma Soriano. At home, French was
spoken among the family members. Juan Bautista Eugenio was called Eugene or
Eugenio by his immediate family and close friends in his daily life in Oriente,
Cuba. It is known that he died before 1896, even though his death certificate
has not been found to date.
At age 23, he
was married to his first cousin Galatea Maria Antonia Sallier y Marrot of 20
yeas of age, by Priest Francisco Airosa, on September 6, 1855 in the Iglesia
Parroquial de Santiago del Prado Real de Minas del Cobre, in Oriente, Cuba, as
it can be verified within Libro 3 de Bautismos de Blancos, Folio 19 vuelto, n
87. They established their residence near El Cobre until the late 1860's when
they apparently moved to Santiago de Cuba (Parroquia Santo Tomas) to escape the
civil war raging in the countryside. Juan Bautista Eugenio TAQUECHEL y Marrot
and Galatea Maria Antonia Sallier y Marrot would be the Authors of Branch IV
TAQUECHEL.

Bautismos de Blancos, Folio 89, n 498. Her godparents were Eugenio Sallier and
Galatea Marrot. At the time of her birth this family lived in El Cobre,
Oriente, Cuba. Maria Eugenia was probably the godmother of Maria Clotilde and

At age ??, he was married to Guadalupe Martí Alayo of ?? years of age, at the Parroquia Santa

it can be verified within Libro 3 de Matrimonios, Folio 113, n 297. Witnesses
to the wedding were Pablo Vives and Juana Alayo. Don Alberto and Guadalupe had
a very good and prosperous life together, however, short. After the death of
Guadalupe Marti y Alayo (1900), Don Alberto TAQUECHEL y Sallier moved to
Guantanamo so that his mother in law, Juana (“Mama Juanica”) could help in the
upbringing of his daughters.
Guadalupe
Marti Alayo was born in El Caney, on ???. Her parents were the catalan Enrique

the family lived at Avenida de la Republica where it met 11th Street in Vista Alegre neighborhood in Santiago de Cuba. In 1913 the
residence is described as being at 8th Street between
11th and 13th in Vista
Alegre, probably describing the same address.
Luis Felipe Duany y Gola was born in Santiago de Cuba circa 1883. He
was the son of Ambrosio Constanso Duany y Montes (17/Feb/1846) and Maria
